Outstanding Textbook!

<Comment>I am a big advocate of the HTP series. I've been reading this series since your 2nd Edition of the Java SE. I've also owned the HTP Visual Basic books when I first started programming. I don't think I have seen a better programming textbox on how to learn any language the "proper" way. It is because of the HTP series that with just an A.S. CIS degree, I am currently in a 6 month internship with IBM Global Services as a Java Web developer. The task given to me has been challenging. I'm responsible for migrating an ASP application to JSP and also developing another JSP application from the ground up.</Comment>

A solid pedagogical way to the implementation of Tomcat 4

<Comment>This is one of the rare books that pave you a way through the implementation of a major software product. The last one I read was Tannenbaums classic "Operating Systems". The Tomcat book is a lot easier to access: Tomcat is written in Java not C and the author takes a lot of trouble of making code iterations especially for pedagogical reasons. I do very much appreciate this. Both authors have a very clear style. They do not enervate and distract you with any vanity. You have ample time during the read for your own thoughts of how you can do better. Usually I found that my ideas were worse and I learned something more. Sure there are rather small questions of style. The code smells a little like C. There are very many if statements. Some routines are quite long... Still it is a pleasure to read the code.

In this book you learn a lot about the implementation of a major software project and a lot about production quality code. You do not learn how to install, administer and use Tomcat. Most is about Tomcat 4. Some ideas are given of the changes due to Tomcat 5. This is a Tomcat 5 aware book but not a book about that version. I am sure this book helps you to actually do extensions of the engine itself, though this certainly is not its main impetus. Be prepared for some very solid reading. Do not worry about the comments with regards to bad editing. The editing is more than adequate.

Much welcome improvements:
(1) Provide an overview of the major interfaces and classes. And provide the central sequence diagram. Put both at a prominent place in the book (maybe inside the book flaps). This should be straightforward and easy for the authors.
(2) Update the book to the newest version of Tomcat. I know this is really asking too much. It takes at least a full time week to read the book, to rewrite takes considerably longer. But it is clear that Tomcat 5 would require even more: an entirely new adapted pedagogically design of the book.

powerful interfaces in Tomcat

<Comment>Tomcat is the most common container for Java servlets. Yet using all its power can be formidably intricate. To help you, the authors spend much space going over the interfaces it offers. Using these is an easy way for your servlets to avail themselves of Tomcat's functions.

Like writing your own logger, specific to your output needs. All it has to do is implement the Catalina Logger interface, and the container can run it. Or, you can use sundry default loggers that come with Tomcat.

The text shows, amongst other things, how Java's interface capability is a profoundly useful enabler of modular code. It lets you integrate easily with Tomcat, using a minimum of coding.</Comment>

I'm afraid I wasn't that impressed

<Comment>Having recently finished TCP/IP illustrated, volume 2, which is a line-by-line treatment of the BSD networking code, I was hoping that "How Tomcat Works" would be as thoughtful and as comprehensive a treatment of Tomcat's code. It wasn't, and it fell far short of my expectations. For the most part, the value of the book comes from the author's organization of the source code - first look at the connectors, then look at containers, then look at wrappers, engines, hosts, etc. This organization is valuable if you're just sitting down to dissect the source, since it gives you a place to start. Otherwise, though, the book didn't provide much information that the source code itself (freely available) doesn't. The authors just present the source code and say, "there you go. That's it". They don't delve into the why or the how - they don't show how the sources tie together or discuss areas where Tomcat might be improved (or why it can't be improved in an otherwise obvious way). All in all, if you're the sort of person who'd be interested in reading this book, you probably already know everything it has to teach you.</Comment>

Only buy this book if you have to...

<Comment>I don't know if the other reviewers read the same book as I did, I think I was tricked by the bookstore and given the wrong book as a cruel joke.

So, let me tell you the reasons why this book was given 1 star:

1) If you a native spaker of the English language, you won't understand this book. Chapter 5 starts out with, "We now turn to the exciting subject of 3D graphics." Who writes like that anymore? The English in this book is very difficult to understand. The author repeatedly states the same piece of information over and over again in different words. At times you begin to wonder if the author is just trying to fill the pages. It's very apparent that English is not the author's first, second, third, forth, or fifth language. After reading the first several pages, one might conclude that perhaps author had the proof reading and translation assistance of a poorly trained monkey.

2) The author has a bad habit of putting words in quotes expecting the reader to know what they mean. Example is on page 112 with 'superpixels'. Any person who has ever taken a technical communications class knows that one should never assume the audience to know topic specific words. If you look up 'superpixel(s)' in the index, it lists 112. Great.

The Pros:
While this book greatly frustrates me, it isn't all bad. The concepts that the author presents are coherent. His execution could use work.

Conspiracy Theory:
This book is not worth the price they charge for it. This is one of those cases where the publishing company and the universities got together and decided to create a textbook. Anytime this happens, they also agree to rip-off the students as much as possible.

One day someone will compile a list of books that aren't worth their weight in coconut shavings, because the publisher and universities were greedy, and this book will rank top 5 of that list.

If you're a student and you're going to fail the class if you don't buy this book - try to get it used.

If you're interested in learning about computer graphics, I cannot recommend this book to you. If you are thinking about buy this book, Jonathan Swift recommends you attempt to steal it first and get arrested. The time that you spend sitting in a cell will give you an opportunity to ponder about something meaningful. Or spend your energies being angry at something else other then this book. </Comment>

Decent writing, painful pricing

<Comment>Although providing nice code examples and clearly explaining the mathemantics of standard computer graphics algorithms, its ~270 (paperback) pages do not cover the scope or detail of the ~1100 (hardcover) pages in "Computer Graphics" by Foley, van Damm, et al., which costs roughly the same amount. John Wiley & Sons needs to be brought to task on the pricing issue, as the high price really shadows the real value (and business opportinity) of the book. My conspiracy theory is that the publisher is aiming to market it as a text book where students can't counter being ripped off by a publisher endorced by a professor or university.</Comment>

Worth every Penny

<Comment>That book was really worth every Penny. I hope Leen Ammeraal (author) continues the tradition in writing such comprehensive textbooks that are generous with information as well as code. If you're taking an introductory course in Computer Graphics and you've already taken an introductory course in JAVA , then that is all you need to optimize your use of this book. Once again, worth every penny.</Comment>

Tutorial Good. Age Bad. Covers out of date version.

<Comment>Alas, the hazards of bound books. Note that this was published in 2001. It covers JDK 1.3, also known as Java 2. The current revision is JDK 5 (which would be 1.5 if they kept the old naming conventions, I think).

That said,it should be sufficient for a lot of folks - but likely frustrating if you have the latest releases of software, since all the detailed commands will have changed (along with some of the function calls...).

Sun keeps up to date copies (downloadable) on line of all these tutorials, so I'd suggest going there first, although having two disparate copies on the go may be more trouble than it's worth, and you may end up ignoring the print version in favor of the on-line. Me, I'm keeping these for reference and have gone out and bought up to date books from other publishers.</Comment>

Confusing and Useless

<Comment>This book is at best a jumble of words with a few readable sentences, and at worst could be written in greek for all the good it does. Without a clear path, the book bounces around off different subjects, and all to often goes ahead of itself in the examples. NOTHING is more anoying then finding a piece of code that you've never seen, and isn't explained for another 4 chapters afterwords. Especially in the first few sections its not uncomon to find an 'ignore this line "..." you'll find out what its for later'. On the upside, it has very few typo's, which doesn't help much as the chapters are so confusing. The best part of this book would have to be its analogies, which are amazingly sensable, such as relating objects and classes to bicycles (One class, 'bicycle' objects of the class such as 'racing' or 'mountain'). In all, its a bit above average but there are much better choices out there for the same price</Comment>

Woefully Inadequate on Basics

<Comment>For someone already familiar with C type programming this is probably an excellent book. It has lots of examples, great linked online resources, a pretty good index, and is one of the most error-free technical books I have read in 5 years of programming. However, this is NOT the book for those with no C (or maybe VB) type programming background.
The authors jump right in using the Java language. While this makes it more interesting it leaves non-C programmers to wonder about the constructs. Examples area great IF they explain everything new that is introduced. For example, the following are used in the first part of the book:
String[ ] args
String args[ ]
String[ ][ ]
But it is not until nearly halfway through the book (end of Ch 4 of 10) that array constructs are discussed. And even then I don't recall any discussion of the difference between the first and second example above. Another example:
Sleep((int)(Math.random() ...))
What is this? Casting maybe? Casting is not even in the index so you just have to guess.
This book needs 2 things to make it excellent: First, an appendix that clearly and thoroughly explains the constructs, syntax rules, and naming conventions - all in one place. For example, what do the curly braces signify, why are empty parens or empty curly braces or semi-colons used, when do you use String[ ] args vs String args[ ] - the works. Secondly, it needs more comments in the examples, including the reasoning involved (eg why variable was declared outside instead of inside method) and an explanation when anything new is used. Admittedly, experienced programmers will not want heavily commented examples, so making those available on line would be a good solution.</Comment>

<ProductDescription>Two hot topics come together in this developer's guide from Brett McLaughlin, Java and XML. Both Java and XML are cross-platform technologies; by using Java for code and XML for transporting data, you can build truly portable applications. This title is aimed at intermediate to advanced programmers; while XML topics are explained more or less from scratch, readers will need prior knowledge of Java.
The book begins with an overview of XML and its uses, and goes on to explain how to parse XML by using the Simple API for XML (SAX 2). Next, there is coverage of how XML is validated by using Document Type Definitions (DTDs) and XML Schema, and transformed by using eXtensible Stylesheet Language (XSL). Brief coverage of Sun's Java API for XML is followed by a detailed look at the Java Document Object Model (JDOM), a new API devised by the author in association with O'Reilly, the publisher.
The last part of the book is more advanced, and covers applications of XML and Java. There are chapters on Web-publishing frameworks, XML Remote Procedure Calls (RPCs), using XML to read and write configuration data, and generating XML with Java. There is also a short business-to-business example. Appendices provide an API reference to the various specifications discussed in the book.
The strengths of Java and XML include the author's deep knowledge of his subject, and a writing style that is both clear and enthusiastic. If you happen to know a lot about Java and not much about XML, this is the ideal title. Readers who already have a good grasp of XML basics might be frustrated by the amount of introductory material. --Tim Anderson</ProductDescription>

Disappointing

<Comment>This book did not come up to the expectations that were set by some of the other reviewers and by O'Reilly themselves.

I bought Java & XML a couple of years ago. I diligently read the first couple of chapters, but then found it unhelpful and put it aside. To find out what SAX and DOM are you have to wade through lots of inconsequential information, only to discover that SAX allows you to parse an XML document on the fly, but doesn't retain it in memory; whereas DOM keeps the document in memory and allows you to manipulate it. Big deal. I could have worked this out by doing some Google searches.

I am writing this review because I have just picked up my (dusty) copy from the bookshelf in the hope of finding something interesting. I was surprised to see that the first example on SAX actually includes a JTree, even though McLaughlin says to ignore it, it is typical of the book to include something irrelevant and simply confusing. Why doesn't he just use a simple console example? What he doesn't say is that the JTree code is really there to make the example longer, so that there are more pages in the book that justify a higher price. You're not going to spend 45 dollars on a weedly little manual, are you? You want something chunky for your money.

When reading this sort of book, I get the feeling that O' Reilly, and similar technical publishers, put a lot of effort into inflating their publications into bigger manuals with lots of pages. McLaughlin is obviously an expert, but he is constrained by the O'Reilly house style, which is deliberately conversational and longwinded so that while you feel that it is easy reading, they are really just making it more difficult to learn simple concepts. As I said before they also pepper the pages with unnecessary sections of code.

In my opinion, another two examples are XSLT and XSLT "cooktop": both these O'Reilly manuals could have been condensed into one book by just cutting the waffle.

Don't get me wrong, I don't enjoy dry, academic journals but at the same time I just wish that these manuals would get to the point quicker .
Pretty much a waste of time

<Comment>Now, after having had this book for about 1 year, and having looked at other sources which explain XML and using XML with Java, do I realize how much of my time this book has wasted.
The author might be a genius, but if you wish to learn XML and it's usage with Java, please take my advise and stay away from this book.
The book is too verbose and the author in the process, to give him the benefit of doubt, forgot to explain the concepts, and then wandered off to his favorite specialized topics such as JDOM and other usages of XML which may be of interest to just a few readers.</Comment>
