Altpapier von Gestern

Es handelt sich sicherlich um ein fundiertes, historisch gewachsenes Oracle Administrationbuch. Leider ist es nicht aktuell. Obwohl das Buch erst im November 2005 erschien und das Relase 2 von 10g bereits im Juli 2005 heraus kam, arbeiteten die Autoren die Neuerungen nicht ein. Stattdessen finden sich hilflose Bemerkungen, wie man hoffe, dass im Release 2 ein bestimmtes Feature erweitert sein möge. Warum hat man das neue Release nicht installiert und nachgeschaut? Als zweites Manko empfinde ich, dass keine CD mit den Listings beiliegt oder eine Downloadmöglichkeit angegeben ist.Die Autoren, die ja auch für bestimmte Firmen stehen, haben sich mit diesem "verspäteten" Buch keinen Gefallen getan. 5

Mein bestes deutsches ORACLE DBA Grundlagen Buch

Wie der Titel suggeriert, handelt es sich um ein Werk für den ORACLE Datenbank Administrator. Der Anwendungsentwickler ist nicht so sehr Zielgruppe dieses Buches, obwohl ich hoffe, dass auch viele ORACLE Programmierer dieses Buch kaufen, um einen tieferen Einblick in die Funktionalitäten des ORACLE Servers zu erhalten.Die Autoren beschreiben die Grundlagen, die jeder ORACLE DBA beherrschen muss, sehr gut, was exakt der Intention der Autoren entspricht. Die Autoren wollen nicht dem letzten neuen Feature hinterher jagen, sondern die Grundlagen legen, um sich diese latest and greatest" Features selbst anhand der Dokumentation erarbeiten zu können. Meiner Meinung nach, sind die Autoren diesem Ziel sehr nahe gekommen.Auch wenn der Umfang des Buches auf den ersten Blick groß zu sein scheint, mussten die Autoren sehr stark selektieren. Durch diesen Zwang zur Kürze muss, enthält dieses Buch wenig Redundanz. Ich empfehle ORACLE9i für den DBA" langsam und genau zu lesen, um nicht einen der - besonders hilfreichen - Kommentare der Autoren zu überlesen. Da die Kollegen nicht jedes Detail der Features des ORACLE Servers beschreiben konnten, ist es nur konsequent auf der CD im Buch die ORACLE 9.0.1 Server Dokumentation beizulegen.Persönlich am besten gefallen, hat mir das Kapitel über Monitoring (Kapitel 9). Ich denke, dass Monitoring zu oft vernachlässigt wird.Das Buch von den Kollegen von HL-Services (Dierk Lenz, Uwe Herrmann und Johannes Ahrends) und Herrn Unbescheid kann ich jedem ORACLE Datenbank Verwalter im Deutschen Sprachraum sehr ans Herz legen, wenn er/sie ein gutes Überblicksbuch sucht. Um alle kleinen Details zu jedem Feature/Anwendungsfall zu lernen, solle man die ORACLE Dokumentation immer mit dabei haben (und ggf. ein Detailbuch auf dem Schreibtisch liegen haben). 5

Wenn ich in meiner Arbeit als DBA mal nicht weiter weiß, greife ich zu diesem Buch. Das galt schon für den Vorgänger und jetzt wieder. Lange habe ich gewartet, bis ich das Buch auch für 9i bekommen konnte, aber ich bin froh, dass es endlich da ist. Wichtig ist natürlich vor allem der ausführliche Index, denn ich benutze das Buch als Nachschlagewerk. Ich habe mir das Buck gekauft, nachdem ich mich als .NET Consultant damit konfrontiert gesehen habe, mein nächstes Projekt mit einer Oracle 10 g R2 DB durchführen zu müssen / können. Dank dieses Buches wurde mir meine Angst davor genommen. Die Installation der DB verlief dank des Buches problemlos. Und auch die Einführungen in die Themen wie ODP, HTMLDB und Oracle Tool for Visual Studio waren hervorragend. Sogar Bezüge zum SQL Server werden hergestellt, so dass man sich als "Microsoftie" schnell in der neuen Welt zurecht findet. Was mir aber definitv am besten gefallen hat, waren die zahlreichen praxisbezogenen Tips, die man zwar oft nur zwischen den Zeilen findet, aber man merkt eben: Hier schreibt ein Mann der Praxis. Danke Herr Jandausch !!! 5

Wer gerne wissen möchte, wie nochmal der Befehl hieß, um die Ausgabe von SQL*Plus für einen Report von Leerzeichen zu befreien, wie die Seitenlänge mit Befehlen eingestellt oder der Anmeldeprozeß verkürzt werden kann, ist mit diesem Büchlein gut bedient. Man findet hier schnell und einfach die wichtigsten SQL*Plus-Befehle, die man im Tagesgeschäft so braucht. Ich hatte nach den ständigen Vertröstungen schon gar nicht mehr auf ein Buch zu HTML DB gehofft. Und jetzt endlich ein neues und dazu auch noch in deutsch verfügbares Buch. Es ist gut strukturiert und hat mir zu den ganzen Komponenten Aufschluss geben können. Super ist auch das Kapitel Anwendungsentwickung mit dem umfassend beschriebenen Beispiel eines Forums. Hier sieht man, was mit HTML DB möglich ist. Selbst für den nicht so Versierten ist die Programmierung des Forums mit den Erläuterungen realisierbar. Sehr gut auch das Kapitel Administration, das zusätzlich wichtige Konfigurationsmöglichkeiten zum Apache-Webserver bietet. Fazit: Es ist keine Referenz im Sinne Oracles für jede einzelne HTML DB-Komponente, sondern ein solides praxisbezogenes Buch für HTML DB-Einsteiger bis zu den ambitionierten HTML DB-Entwicklern /-Administratoren. 4

Verständlich für Jedermann

Bevor ich mir dieses Buch kaufte, musste ich bereits ohne vorherige Kenntnisse Access-Anwendungen in "HTML DB" implementieren. Dank der grafischen Oberfläche und Assistenten, die die meisten Aktionen begleiten und vereinfachen, war für mich das Erstellen von Webanwendungen mit "HTML DB" leicht möglich. Die Software ist somit für jeden geeignet, auch für "Nicht-Programmierer", jedoch ist es sinnvoll, Grundkenntnisse in HTML, SQL, PL/SQL und JavaScript zu besitzen. Mithilfe dieses Buches konnte ich meine bisherigen Kenntnisse erweitern. Die Autoren dieses Buches setzen sich mit allen Komponenten, die "HTML DB" bietet, sowie der Anwendungsentwicklung und Administration auseinander. Jede Komponente wird ausführlich beschrieben und anhand von Beispielen dargestellt. Zusätzlich wird anhand einer Beispeilanwendung die Herangehensweise an ein kundenspezifisches Projekt vermittelt. Dabei werden Schritt für Schritt neue Bestandteile von "HTML DB" erläutert und mit den bereits von vorherigen Kapiteln bekannten Komponenten verknüpft. Hinzu kommen viele nützliche Tipps, Tricks und Erfahrungen der Autoren. Der Administrationsteil über "HMTL DB" (z.B. Istallation von "HTML DB", Webserverkonfiguration, Benutzerverwaltung usw.) ist in diesem Buch sehr umfassend und verständlich beschrieben. Im Ganzen ist dieses Buch sowohl für Einsteiger als auch für Fortgeschrittene geeignet. Ein sehr wertvolles Buch

Das Buch hat mich positiv überrascht. Es ist sehr praxisnah und wird durch die vielen Beispiele nie langweilig. Neben den guten Hinweisen zur praktischen Anwendung begrüße ich, dass die Beispiele einfach nachvollziehbar sind. Das Buch deckt sehr viele Bereiche ab, die in vielen Unternehmen anzutreffen sind. 2

Dieses Werk zeigt durchaus lobenswerte Ansätze; man kann ihm ansehen,daß zumindest einer der Autoren über überdurchschnittliche Oracle-Kenntnisse verfügt. Leider wimmelt das umfangreiche Buch von fachlichen Fehlern (Bsp. Super Nachschlagewerk

Das Buch hat mich echt begeistert, es deckt fast alle Bereiche der Oracle 10g Datenbank ab. Die vielen Beispiele machen es einfach, ein Aufgabe lösen und im Vergleich zu manch anderem Buch, scheinen die Beispiele alle von vorn herein zu funktionieren. Das Herausstellen der neuen Features im ersten Abschnitt gibt einen sehr guten Überblick der Neuerungen in Oracle 10g. Das Buch hat mir den Umstieg von Oracle 9 zu Oracle 10 wesentlich erleichtert, u.a. auch das Kapitel über Migrationen. Es ist offensichtlich dass die Autoren aus der Praxis kommen. Ich hätte mir einen stärkeren Ausbau des Bereichs Optimierung und Tuning gewünscht und dafür vielleicht den Teil Data Warehouse weglassen. Trotzdem 5 Sterne. 5

Eine umfassende Referenz sehr praxisnah

Das Buch gefällt mir hervorragend. Für mich als DBA ist es besonders wichtig, einen schnellen Zugriff auf die vielen Features der Oracle Datenbank zu haben. Die vielen Beispiele und Installationsschritte erleichtern den Einstieg in neue Features. Auch das Herausstellen der neuen Features in einem extra Abschnitt finde ich sehr gut. Wer mit Oracle 9 vertraut ist erhält damit einen guten Überblick der Neuerungen in 10g. Zu RAC das beste Buch, das ich habe

Zum Real Application Cluster ist das mein bestes Buch, dass ich habe. Auch die in das Thema "Hochverfügbarkeit" einführenden Kapitel sind gut strukturiert und verständlich. Das Kapitel zu Automatic Storage Management fand ich sehr gut. Zum Thema Parallelisierung im Cluster hätte ich gerne noch ein paar mehr Details erfahren, wie z.B. wie geht genau eine Anfrage vonstatten. Failover-Cluster werden hier auch nicht genauer dargestellt, aber dafür ist die Fülle an Lösungen auf dem Markt auch einfach zu groß. Man erhält hierzu nur eine kurze Übersicht.Anders als einer meiner Vorredner finde ich die Befehlsreferenz gut verständlich und in der Darstellung übersichtlich. Diese ist immer auch mit Beispielen erläutert. Die restlichen Themen zu Standby Datenbanken usw. haben mich erstmal (noch) nicht weiter interessiert, da ich damit bislang noch nichts zu tun habe. Aber mein Eindruck ist wirklich: Sehr gut. Für komplette Neueinsteiger dürften die einführenden Kapitel in das Thema Hochverfügbarkeit sehr interessant sein. Aber die späteren sehr technischen Dinge sind für einen kompletten Neuling meines Erachtens zu hoch. Ein solcher würde sicher zunächst noch ergänzende, einführende Literatur wie z.B. das DBA-Handbuch von Hanser benötigen und sich mit der Architektur der Oracle Datenbank auseinandersetzen müssen. Auf die Basisthemen wie "Was sind Redo Logs und wofür braucht man die" wird hier nur ganz, ganz kurz eingegangen. Versierte System- und Datenbankadministratoren dürften dagegen recht zufrieden mit dem doch sehr ergiebigen Inhalt sein. Insgesamt halte ich das Buch für gelungen. Man findet hier eigentlich alles, was man zum Thema so braucht. 5

Gute Übersicht

"Oracle 10g Hochverfügbarkeit" ist eines der besten Oracle-Bücher in meiner Sammlung. Das Thema Hochverfügbarkeit wird hier von vielen Seiten beleuchtet. Die Einführung enthält eine detaillierte Darstellung der Metriken, deren mathematische Grundlagen zur Berechnung der Systemverfügbarkeit, Informationen zur Bedarfsanalyse sowie eine Gegenüberstellung zu Ausfallkosten und Aufwänden zur Realisierung von Hochverfügbarkeit. Tips zur Vorgehensweise bei der Architekturbestimmung runden das ganze ab.Als Ergänzung kann ich noch "Oracle Database 10g High Availability with RAC, Flashback & Data Guard" von Matthew Hart und Scott Jesse empfehlen. An manchen Stellen gibt es Redundanzen zwischen beiden Büchern, aber vieles ist in dem jeweils anderen Buch zu finden, was in dem einen fehlt. Mein Tip: Wer eher nur praktisch an das Thema herangehen will, sollte das Buch von Hart und Jesse vorziehen. Wer eher auch etwas über die Grundlagen erfahren und ab und zu mal was nachschlagen will, ist mit dem Titel von Held besser beraten. Für den, der nicht auf den Geldbeutel schauen muss, ist die Kombination aus beiden ideal. Beide Bücher ergänzen sich optimal. 5

Sehr gelungener Einstieg

Das Buch ORACLE 10g Hochverfügbarkeit bietet einen fundierten und gelungenen Einstieg in das Thema. Der aus meiner Sicht wichtigste Teil war jener, der einen grundlegenden Überblick zur Herangehensweise aufzeigt. Neben Kennzahlen zur Berechnung der Systemverfügbarkeit erhält man hier elementare Informationen, die für jedes Betriebssystem und für jede Datenbank gelten: Hier werden grundlegende Verfahren wie die Bedarfsanalyse, Erstellung von Notfallplänen, aber auch mathematische Berechnungsgrundlagen sachkundig dargestellt. Dies alles lässt sich auf andere Systeme problemlos übertragen. In einem zweiten Teil wird zunächst ein allgemeiner Überblick zu Verfahren auf Oracle-Basis aufgezeigt. Hier gibt es eine kurze Darstellung der anwendbaren Funktionen. Die Übersicht der Vor- und Nachteile und Anwendungsszenarien leitet über in den Hauptteil, in dem sehr detailliert auf die einzelnen Themen eingegangen wird. ASM, Flashback, RAC und Standby-Datenbanken sind hier die Themen, die eingehend ausgearbeitet werden. Hier wird immer ähnlich vorgegangen: Technische Voraussetzungen, Hintergrundprozesse, die Realisierung. Zum Teil wird dabei detailliert auf einzelne Betriebssysteme eingegangen. Informationen zur Administration hochverfügbarer Oracle Systeme, zu Fast Recovery und zur Online Wartung runden das Ganze recht brauchbar ab. Nicht zu empfehlen!

Ich kann mich dem Vorredner (Arakon) nur anschließen: - Das Buch ist nicht sehr gut strukturiert - Es sind Fehler enthalten - Es bezieht sich insbesondere was den Oracle Enterprise Manager angeht auf den alten 9i OEM obwohl auf dem Einband dick 10g steht - An manchen Stellen wird plötzlich in die Tiefe gegangen (zum Beispiel in die Prozeßarchitektur), ohne das vorher die Grundlagen erklärt wurden.Ich bin Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) und habe das Buch durch einen Kollegen in die Finger bekommen. Ich kann es keinem zum Einstieg empfehlen, und zum Umstieg auf 10g für den alten Hasen ist es auch nicht geeignet. 1

kurz und gut.... unfähig, unzufrieden, und einfach schlecht!

Ich schreibe nicht häufig Rezensionen, ausser ein Buch gefällt mir sehr gut, so dass ich denke, dass es Wert ist gelobt zu werden, oder es ist einfach so schlecht, dass ich das Gefühl habe andere warnen zu wollen. Der letze Fall tritt äußerst selten ein, da meine Toleranzschwelle sehr hoch ist, wenn es darum geht, dass ich mir anmaße etwas als so schlecht zu beurteilen, dass ich die Notwendigkeit sehe etwas darüber schreiben zu müssen. Bei diesem Buch habe ich nun zum ersten male das Gefühl dies tun zu müssen.Mal ganz abgesehen von der Tatsache, dass dieses Buch wohl nie irgendjemand auf grammatikalisch und orthografische Fehler hin untersucht hat, bleibt folgendes anzumerken. Wenn der Leser vor dem Lesen des Buches keine Ahnung von der Materie hatte, hinterher hat er auf alle Fälle nicht mehr Erfahrung oder Anreize weiter in dieser Materie voranzukommen. Sollten Sie Ahnung von der Materie haben, so sollten Sie sich dieses Buch vor allem nicht antun. Der Autor erklärt zwar in den einleitenden Kapiteln, dass dies ein Werk darstellen soll, um einen großen Überblick zu bekommen, jedoch schweift er hin und wieder vollkommen grundlagenentfremdet in Details ab, für die er nicht einmal im Ansatz ein Fundament gelegt hat, geschweige denn auf weiterführende Literatur verweist. Der Informationsgrad ist äußerst spärlich, und die Argumentationsketten respektive Begründungen lassen nichteinmal Interesse am Thema zurück. Das Buch bekam wirklich häufig von Kapitel zu Kapitel erneut von mir eine wertneutrale Chance einfach nur besser zu werden (nicht einmal gut, sondern einfach nur besser), und ich habe mich einfach jedesmal wieder über dieses Stümpertum aufgeregt. Ich kann nur jedem empfehlen dieses Buch nicht zu kaufen. Allerdings habe ich auch keinen Alternativvorschlag, im Zusammenhang mit ORACLE 10g und dessen Administration. Dieses Buch hätte man (abgesehen von einigen wenigen Seiten) auch als ORACLE 9i Buch verkaufen können, wobei meine Bewertung dabei nicht besser gewesen wäre. PL/SQL-Anfänger | Java/C++-Fortgeschrittene

Das Buch teilt sich in folgende Teile: ca. 200 Seiten SQL, wobei fast ausschließlich Abfragen der Datenbank behandelt werden. Diesen Teil hat man möglicherweise schon einmal woanders gefunden, allerdings bietet es eine übraus ausführliche Darstellung von komplexen Abfragetechniken, die zwar selten vorkommen, aber - ich war überrascht - allerhand an zusäztlichen Anweisungen verhindern und schon in der Abfrage brauchbare Ergebnisse liefern. Dann ca. 400 Seiten PL/SQL als Einführung in die Programmierung mit Funktionen, Prozeduren, Paketen, Triggern und den dazugehörigen Sprachfeatures. Dann ca. 200 Java mit SQLJ, Java Stored Procedures und Beispielen, wie man mit PL/SQL-Prozeduren interagiert. Dann ca. 100 Seiten mit PHP (leider Version 4) und C++. Den letztn Teil kann ich nicht bewerten, da ich kein C++ beherrsche. Fazit: Wenn man sich für PL/SQL und SQL interessiert und eine der beiden großen Sprachen C++ und Java beherrscht, ist das Buch genau das richtige, weil man wirklich ein allgemeines Programmierhandbuch zu Oracle besitzt. Während für die beiden großen Sprachen natürlich Vorkenntnisse notwendig sind, da hier selbstverständlich nicht in die Sprachen eingeführt wird, wird PL/SQL von Grund auf erklärt. Mir hats als Lehrbuch gefallen und ich denke, das Buch könnte sich als Standard durchsetzen. 5

Viel Inhalt

Wenn man nicht schon Java oder C++ kann, gibt man sicherlich 15 Euro für Seiten aus, die man nicht sofort gebrauchen kann. Allerdings ist es vermutlich schwierig, ein Buch zu finden, in dem soviel zur Syntax von Oracle Programmierung gesagt wird wie hier. Es fehlen zwar große Anwendungsbeispiele, aber die Syntax von PL/SQL, Java und C++ für Oracle ist meiner Meinung nach gut dargestellt. Einige Sachen weiß man ja immer schon vorher, sodass vielleicht 50 Seiten SQL aus gereicht hätten, doch die verschiedenen Beispiele zu den analytischen Funktionen machen dann auch das SQL-Kapitel interessant. Mir gefällt, dass man eine Spieldatenbank erhält und mit so vielen Programmiersprachen daran gewerkelt wird. 4

Tatsächlich für Programmierer geeignet

Ich programmiere Java und werde bald Oracle als DB verwenden. Das Buch fiel mir aufgrund seiner Dicke auf (hat zwar nichts zu bedeuten, aber man hat ja immer Hoffnung), und weil die Einstiegserläuterungen (Installation etc.) nur auf 30 Seiten kurz und knapp abgehandelt werden. Mehr wollte ich auch nicht wissen, denn DBA wird sicherlich nicht mein Thema sein. Was ich wirklich klasse finde, ist die Tatsache, dass man in diesem Buch Themen findet, die ich zumindest bisher noch nicht in anderen gefunden habe. Gut, SQL ist noch mal in 50 Seiten erklärt, was man vermutlich sowieso schon weiß, aber dann gibt es doch noch einige Oracle-Spezialitäten, die man sonst möglicherweise noch nicht wusste. Für Java- und C++-Programmierer ist die interne Programmierung (also zum Glück nicht zum x-ten Mal JDBC, sondern wirklich nur "innen drin") knackig erklärt, kurze theoretische Einführung, dann Quelltext. Leider nicht was ich erwartet habe.

Gemessen an den anderen Büchern aus der Reihe "kurz & gut", die ich in meinem Bücherregal stehen habe, ist diese Ausgabe ein wahres Schwergewicht. Bei einem Umfang von über 170 Seiten bin ich jedoch etwas enttäuscht darüber, dass dem Erstellen von Tabellen nur sehr wenig und FUNCTIONs und TRIGGERn gar kein Platz eingeräumt wurde. Natürlich wird man viel öfter Daten verändern, einfügen oder abfragen, als eine Datenbank zu erstellen, ich hatte aber auf diese Informationen gehofft und war daher etwas enttäuscht.Die Themen, die behandelt werden, sind - wie von O'Reilly gewohnt - in klaren Worten sehr umfassend beschrieben.Man sollte sich vor dem Kauf auf jeden Fall die Kurzbeschreibung durchlesen. Sie gibt sehr gut wider, was man vom Inhalt des Buches erwarten kann. The notebook casts a curious hold over Orr and seems to enable him to write, something he hasn't done since coming out of hospital. He writes a story about a books' editor who, on serendipitously avoiding some falling masonry, decides to read the near-accident as a reason to change his life. He takes an unread, recently discovered, manuscript of an important writer from the 1930s, Sylvia Maxwell, and disappears off to Kansas City. Reinvention and the associated idea that identity is fluid, re-imaginable, are linked, as is often the case with Auster, to the idea of chance. So, Auster's usual themes are here: writing about writers and writing he discusses themes such as identity, disappearance, creativity, chance. But, despite what initially looks like a tricky structure (with footnotes and stories within stories) this is really a novel about love and forgiveness. Notwithstanding the dubious reputation of being a "writer's writer" the philosophical Auster has written a comparatively simple, very moving, quite brilliant novel. Laaaaaangweilig! Und nervtötend.

Ich habe gern und viel von Paul Auster gelesen. Aber diesmal ist es das erste Mal, das ich ein Buch von ihm wahrscheinlich nicht zu Ende lesen werde, weil es mir so derartig auf den Geist geht. Die Fußnoten, die in dieser Taschenbuchausgabe zum Teil über drei Seiten gehen und die ohnehin konfuse Story damit restlos zerreisen, tragen einen guten Anteil zu meiner Genervtheit bei. Und so langsam reichts mal mit Schrifstellern, die über Schriftsteller schreiben, welche hier zu allem Überfluß ihreseits Schriftsteller sind. Nichts gegen Paul Auster, aber wäre dieses mein erstes Buch von ihm gewesen, hätte ich wahrscheinlich nie wieder irgendwas anderes von ihm in die Hand genommen. 1

Pathetic

I gave it a chance, even read through to the bitter end just because I could not believe how much I disliked it. I don't know if I really expected a change after the first boring 50 pages. The first thing that really annoyed me was the collection of footnotes with lots of totally irrelevant stuff around one or two items of interest missing from the main thread if skipped, thereby forcing me to break the text flow, and then I found the whole setting too constructed, with a tight-lipped, dull, pathetic, boring, bad-tempered, strained, green-blooded basic feeling and oh! so wittily entangled secondary story lines that unfolded into whole unexpected new worlds of disappointment. I really never appreciated falling asleep on a train as much as I did while having only this book to read with me. 4

Zurück zu alter Stärke!!

"Thoughts are real [...] Words are real. Everything human is real and sometimes we know things before they happen, even if we aren't aware of them. We live in the present, but the future is inside us at every moment. Maybe that's what writing is all about, Sid. Not recording events from the past, but making things happen in the future." (189)Dies ist die Einsicht des Schriftstellers John Trause, gemeinsamer Freund des Protagonisten Sydney Orr und seiner Frau Grace. Dies könnte aber auch viel mehr sein. Trause ist ein Palindrom für Auster und somit könnter der Autor hochstpersönlich durch sein fiktionales alter ego seine Ansicht über die Kraft der Literatur zum Ausdruck bringen.Diese Vermischung der Erzählebenen würde auch gut in den Gesamtkontext des Romans passen, wo der Leser zwischen drei Erzählebenen unterschieden muss:Ebene 1: Sydney Orr, Schriftsteller, erholt sich von einem schweren Unfall und beginnt nach langer Pause wieder mit dem Schreiben.Ebene 2: Der Protagonist von Orrs Geschichte, Nick Bowen, bricht von einem Tag auf den anderen die Brücke zu seinem alten Leben ab und will in Kansas City einen Neuanfang wagen. Dort trifft er den Taxifahrer Ed Victory, der ihn engagiert, ihm bei der Neuordnung seines privaten Archivs zu helfen. Dabei schließt Bowen sich versehentlich in einem von Ed's Bunker ein und da dieser zeitgleich stirbt, gibt es kein Entkommen. Bowen vertreibt sich die Zeit, indem er das Manuskript eines unveröffentlichen Romans, geschrieben kurz nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg, liest. Dieser Roman heißt Oracle Night.Ebene 3: Protagonist von Oracle Night ist Lemuel Flagg, ein im Krieg schwer verwundeter Soldat, der seitdem prophetische Gaben besitzt. So sieht er den Tod guter Freunde und den Ehebruch seiner Frau voraus. Nicht in der Lage mit dieser Begabung zu leben, begeht er Selbstmord.Mehr soll über den Inhalt nicht verraten werden. Thema des Romans ist, typisch Auster, das Schreiben über das Schreiben, über die Fähigkeit von Literatur den Kontext nicht nur wiederzuspiegeln sondern zu beeinflussen (siehe Zitat). Gott sei Dank gelingt Auster dies besser als in seinem Vorgängerroman "Book of Illusions". In "Oracle Night" fügen sich die Ebenen gegen Ende zu einem kohärenten Ganzen zusammen und lassen gleichzeitig noch jede Menge Platz für weitschweifende philosophische, psychologische und anderweitige Interpretationen.Die Qualität seines genialen Erstlingwerkes "The New York Trilogy" erreicht Auster nicht, weshalb ich "Oracle Night" nur vier Sterne gebe. Gutes Gebrauchsbuch

Die IT-Budgets sind in den letzten Jahren drastisch geschrumpft. Aber ob dies den Unternehmen tatsächlich Geld gespart hat, ist fraglich. Nach Meinung des Autors Theo Saleck ist die klare Antwort: Nein. Kostensparprogramme wirken fast nur auf die offensichtlichen, primären Kosten, die sich der IT klar zurechnen lassen. Die höchsten Kosten entstehen jedoch mittelbar und verdeckt. Traditionelle Sparprogramme gehen an ihnen vorbei oder wirken gar kontraproduktiv. Saleck zeigt in seinem Buch, wie offene und verdeckte IT-Kosten entstehen, zusammenhängen und wie sie sich managen lassen. Dabei liegt der Schwerpunkt auf der Kostenanalyse, die er klar, übersichtlich und verständlich darstellt und durch nützliche Checklisten ergänzt. Das Management und die Umsetzung kommen dagegen etwas zu kurz: Saleck widmet beiden nur die letzten 41 der 172 Inhaltsseiten. Insgesamt ein gutes Gebrauchsbuch, das sich der Unternehmenschef durchlesen sollte, bevor er in die nächsten Meetings mit seinen IT-Leuten geht. Wir empfehlen es allen, die mit dem Management von IT-Strukturen zu tun haben: mittelständischen Unternehmern, Organisationsleitern und IT-Technikern, die sich für die kaufmännische Seite ihres Tuns interessieren. 5

Wider dem Kosten-Hype

Kosten, bzw. Kostensenkung sind aktuelle Schlagworte. Leider fällt vielen hoch bezahlten, aber leider fantasiearmen Firmenmanagern dazu oft nur der Abbau von Arbeitsplätzen ein. Dieser Kostensenkungs-Hype (Kostensenkung, koste es, was es wolle) macht mittlerweile auch vor den IT-Kosten nicht halt. Es ist das Verdienst des Buchs von Theo Saleck, dass das Thema IT-Kosten (und wie man sie sinnvoll reduzieren kann) unabhängig von dem derzeitigen Kosten-Hype in allen seinen Facetten dargestellt wird. Hierzu beleuchtet Theo Saleck zunächst die Komponenten und Zusammenhänge der IT-Kosten. Da in der IT "auch" Menschen tätig sind, folgt ein Blick auf die Betroffenen und Handelnde mit ihren Rollen und Interessen. Damit man den IT-Kosten wirklich gerecht werden kann, müssen die Kosten berechnet und bewertet werden, erst danach kann man daran gehen die Kosten zu managen und die hierzu notwendigen Maßnahmen in Angriff nehmen. Diese ganze Vielfalt der Themen rund um die IT-Kosten wurde von Theo Saleck sehr strukturiert aufgearbeitet. Um diese eigentlich recht trockene Thematik zu veranschaulichen, werden von Theo Saleck sehr viele Grafiken, Tabellen und Checklisten eingesetzt. Natürlich fehlen ein ausführlicher Glossar und ein Index nicht. Ein besonderer Lesegenuss sind aus meiner Sicht die von ihm eingestreuten "Fälle aus dem Leben", die vermuten lassen, das er das eine oder andere davon tatsächlich so in seiner beruflichen Praxis erlebt hat. Denn die besten Satiren schreibt ja bekanntlich das Leben. Das Buch gibt einen guten Einblick in die Komplexität der IT-Kosten und zeigt Wege auf, wie die Kosten in den Griff zu bekommen sind. Diese Wege sind aber andere als die, die heute oft praktiziert werden. Wer das Buch von Theo Saleck gelesen hat, wird erkennen, dass die IT-Kosten viel zu komplex sind, als dass sie sich einfach durch Personlababbau lösen ließen. Es bleibt zu wünschen, dass möglichst viele Entscheider sich dieses Buch zu Gemüte führen. Sehr schöne Karten!!!

Es gibt so viele verschiedene Lenormandkarten und ich besitze auch drei verschiedene Kartendecks. Mir gefallen diese Karten, neben dem Kartendeck ,,Blaue Eule" am besten. Diese Karten sehen so mittelalterlich und mystisch aus, was viele meiner Kunden beeindruckt. Das einzige was mir nicht so gut gefällt ist, dass hier die Skatkartenmotive fehlen. Aber für einen Anfänger ist es erst mal besser nur mit den Symbolen zu arbeiten ohne die Skatkarten mit einzubeziehen. WUNDERSCHÖN UND AUCH OHNE DT. BEGLEITBUCH AUSSAGEFÄHIG

Die " Sibilla Oracle Cards " erstand ich als langjährige Kartenlegerin einfach nur deshalb, weil ich gerne Kartensets sammle. Jedoch vom ersten Tag des Auflegens "sprudelten" sie mir nur so die Informationen der Zukunft hervor, und ich führe das genau darauf zurück, daß es hier kein sonst übliches ( deutsches ) Begleitbuch dazu gibt, und man seine Intuition anhand der schönen Bilder einfach so fließen lassen kann. Übrigens steht auch auf jeder Karte eine Bedeutung mit drauf,so daß Text und Bild der Karte sich sehr einfach deuten lassen. Vieleicht sind diese Karten für einen Anfänger nicht so gut geeignet, jedoch glaube ich ansonsten, daß sie eine wunderschöne Bereicherung für jeden Kartenleger darstellen. 1

Klassiker für PL/SQL-Programmierung

Dieses Buch ist der Klassiker zum Thema PL/SQL-Programmierung. Für den kompletten Neueinsteiger ist es damit ein bisschen schwierig, PL/SQL zu erlernen, da viele Fachbegriffe vorausgesetzt werden. Aber wer sich mit Oracle schon ein klein wenig auskennt, findet hier ein sehr gutes Nachschlagewerk. Auch versierte Oracle-Entwickler werden hier noch den ein oder anderen neuen Hinweis finden (zum Beispiel in den Best Practices).Dieses Buch sollte m.E. dem Schreibtisch eines Oracle-Datenbankentwicklers stets bereitliegen. Für Einsteiger ist das Buch im Ansatz ganz gut. Der Inhalt wird in die beiden Bereiche Java und XML aufgeteilt. Diese sind prägnant und einleuchtend beschrieben.Insgesamt liegt der Schwerpunkt auf der serverseitigen Programmierung, weniger auf der clientseitigen.Zum Schluss fehlt mir allerdings ein ganz spannender Teil: die Integration von Java zusammen mit XML, um auf Oracle zuzugreifen. Excellent reference book for developers

This is an excellent reference book for developers using Mozilla technologies to build graphical user interfaces. The book gives very detailed information about the XUL tags, XPCOM, RDF, XBL, etc. The nice thing about this book is that it gives plenty of hints, tips and advice and also emphasizes the practical application by developing an application in a step-by-step fashion at the end of each chapter. This book is one of my "standard" reference books for XUL development. I found this book well worth having

This was the first Mozilla XUL book that I read; I now have Nigel McFarlane's book as well. I had been meaning to learn more about it for years and tried off and on by looking at example scripts and reading online documentation here and there. I finally decided to break down and buy a book on JavaScript, and I'm glad that it was this one. I can't recommend it highly enough - it's especially targeted at people with programming experience. This book doesn't waste your time with basic constructs or meaningless metaphors; it gets to the point, describes JavaScript, and lets you get on about your business. As the book itself clarifies, JavaScript itself is just a programming language and doesn't necessarily have anything to do with web browsers per se. However, since virtually all JavaScript programming is done for the purpose of controlling web pages, the author specifically dedicates one third of the book to the core JavaScript language, and another third to a thorough description of the bindings between JavaScript and the browser. (The final third is a well-indexed reference that you'll find indispensable). Since you're probably most interested in the JavaScript-browser bindings (the core language is fairly well documented online), let me say that this books coverage of it is excellent. It covers the entire history of JavaScript, detailing compatibility issues between Netscape, IE, and Mozilla (all the way back to the very first release of Netscape) and detailing exactly the sorts of uses that JavaScript is typically being put to these days. An example in the section on event handling shows how to implement drag and drop on a web page in JavaScript (bet you didn't know you could do that!) and there's even a lengthy section on the relationship between JavaScript and CSS. I couldn't be happier with the book - it lived entirely up to my expectations and was well worth the money I spent on it. 5

Better than a reference

JavaScript the definitive guide is not only the reference, it is built following a logical pattern, is full of useful tips, warnings and recommendations ; it is made by somebody who is well aware of JS strengths and weakenesses, someone used to programming languages able to find out what is behind this interpreted code. Unfortunately, JavaScript is not like C++ or Java, its implementation depends on the browser, and this book enhances differences between implementations - reading the book help preventing headaches due to the differences between browsers. The "icing on the cake" is the 45 pages intuitive index. A must-have. 1

Way out-dated; new edition coming out Aug 2006

This 4th edition of Javascript was published in 2001 and is by now way out-dated. Granted, a lot has *not* changed with Javascript, but new techniques and formats have become available. Luckily, a new edition (5th ed.) of this book will be available in August 2006. Better hold off your purchase until the new edition. I just received my copy (sorry amazon, not from you) and i've spent a good chunk of 2 days working through the examples and I have to say that I'm super impressed. I've been wanting to do some MSN virtual earth stuff for quite a while and the mapping chapter was spot on! I still have a few chapters to go, but so far I'm loving it! Has everything!

Sas Jacobs writes in the Introduction that she wanted this book to be a one-stop shop to learn how to build XML web applications. I think she reached her goal. Besides being a mouthful, Beginning XML with DOM and Ajax is crammed with just about every XML topic you can think of from both the client and server side. The topics on the client side cover all the usual suspects such as XSLT and DOM. There're also a few odd client side topics covered as well -- such as mixing CSS and XML and using XML with Flash. The server side section of the book is noticeably shorter than the client side. It's really just one chapter doing a quick overview of ASP and PHP related XML tools. At the very end, there are two case studies -- one for ASP and one for PHP -- in which a full XML-based web application is built. These two studies are really great and definitely build on the server side chapter. All of these topics are covered in a book just over 400 pages long. Now this might be the only time you hear me say this, but I think this book is a little short for all the topics it covers. Don't get me wrong, the coverage is excellent, the examples are numerous, and the case studies are detailed; however, reading this book was a bit like eating incredibly rich chocolate -- even small portions were more than enough to handle. 4

Works for both beginning and experienced developers

The book is an excellent introduction into XML, what in today's world of distributed, multi-platform applications development, is an unavoidable and critical technology. An essential amount of foundation is provided on the basics of XML and XHTML (DTDs schema, structuring rules, web vocabularies, etc.), it also delves into CSS, DOM scripting, remoting via XMLHTTP for AJAX interfaces, server-side XML in ASP.NET 2.0 and PHP, and using XML in Flash applications. Each chapter has a good amount of web-based resources to check out. Even experienced developers will find something useful in this book. Author Sas Jacobs features a great discussion about using some of the lesser-known niche features of CSS with XML, and provides healthy, practical examples you can replicate or download and instantly implement in your own web projects. My favorite chapter, and the one I've broke the spine on for my own copy, is Chapter 7 - "Advanced Client-Side XSLT Techniques". There you'll find the necessary information for building sophisticated (if not universally supported by all browsers) web UIs through integrated transformations. This includes demonstrating how to use extension functions/objects, generating JavaScript through XSLT, and dynamic client-side sorting. Most of these are MSIE-dependent, but the chapter also takes into consideration proper testing for graceful degradation in Firefox, Mozilla, Safari, etc. For similar reasons, I likewise got a lot out of the "DOM Scripting" discussion. In criticism, I would have liked the chapter on XSLT - in my opinion the section most people reading this book will need the most - to be longer. It's rather rudimentary even and doesn't cover some of the more time-saving features of XSLT. Also, I found the "Web Vocabularies" to be extraneous; interesting but not warranting an entire chapter in today's WWW. The book would also benefit from an appendix of the resources mentioned for various tools, URLs and technologies available to speed XML-related development. Analytical look at Ajax implementations

Very nicely done. The author spends time analyzing the problems various Ajax implementations are trying to solve and abstracts the concepts into a "pattern". I appreciated the author's attempt to allocate an "established use" value to each pattern described, which ranges from "widespread usage" to "purely speculative". The book is very nicely put together; the analysis and explanations are well thought through. As it is a book on design patterns for Ajax, it is appropriately geared more toward the explanations than code snippets, but there is still plenty of example code and (as expected) plenty to download or view online. For each of the approximately 70 patterns described, there is a discussion of the factors for why the pattern exists as well as descriptions of solutions and a real-world example or two (or more). Nice walkthrough, but a little too shallow

I like the writing in this book. The author definitely knows his stuff. The design of the book is a set of case studies that show how AJAX is used in various applications. And through those examples you learn not just AJAX but also the DOM and CSS. My only gripe with the book is that it didn't go far enough. It's deep enough to get your toe wet. But when you want to get deeper you will need to get other books like the excellent "Dynamic HTML" book from O'Reilly. 5

Great Ajax book

The craze of Ajax has publishers rushing their own Ajax books to market to get a piece of the Ajax pie so to speak. This book sets itself apart from the other Ajax books for one reason...Clear, concise explanations with no confusing terminology! The author uses code snippets, browser results snapshots, and nice white space to allow the reader to digest what the author is talking about without getting overloading with techno-babble. In my opinion, the most important part in learning Ajax is not the fancy DOM effects or the server-side coding to pull the data; it is understanding how you need to use the XMLHttpRequest object in sending and receiving requests from the server. The way we program our web applications to send and receive data from the server has changed with Ajax and this book shows the reader in gradual steps how to utilize the Ajax pieces in creating some useful editions to your website. This book assumes you have knowledge of CSS and JavaScript, but that's it. You don't have to be a guru in either, just have a good basic understanding of each. The rest will be supplied by the author's code examples. Actually reading this book and learning Ajax will help you create better accessible website (even if you don't use Ajax), because it focuses on using technologies where they can degrade nicely if the user of the site does not have the most up-to-date browser or is using a screen reader which would definitely hinder on the web experience. The most important chapter(s) in my opinion are Chapters 2, 3 and 4 where the author explains in great detail the XMLHttpRequest object and how is it is used to send a request asynchronously in getting requests from the server. I really like (as mentioned before) how the author stresses graceful degradation in case the object is not supported in the user's browser. Most of the other books that I have read through on Ajax do not even mention this and is a vital part in creating accessible web sites. Chapter 3 continues the theme on understanding the basics of asynchronous server requests with some useful examples that can be used right away in most websites. IE issues on memory leaks (hopefully eliminated with IE7), CSS and JavaScript differences are also discussed. Of course most other books slip other these simple things that can cause you hours of debugging and research on your part. Chapter 4 is the meat and potatoes of using GET and POST and how different salutations would lead you to using either one. Some nice useful, "real-world" examples are show and I have already incorporated one of these already. The author shows you how to incorporate Ajax in a simple login page to make it look more professional. Another topic in this chapter that I have never seen in another Ajax book is how Ajax is can be used with screen readers and has information on how to test it for (JAWS, IBM Home Page, Windows-Eyes, and Hal). That is another great addition that should be in every Ajax book (and actually most other web design and development books). I never knew how to test my web pages in screen readers until I read this chapter on it. Great Job! The rest of the book focuses on incorporating different web services, how to not loose the Back button, and creating some fancy DOM-based effects with Ajax. Great Review of an evolving API

Microsoft Atlas is THE API for Ajax developers, and this book is a terrific grounding in how to use it. Great job Apress! Yes, it suffers from some syntax problems that other reviewers have mentioned on here BUT it is an evolving API. It is based on an earlier CTP (April) and MS have just released the June one. I emailed the author and he mentioned that he is working on revising and updating the text for the new CTPs. He is very fast to respond to any queries -- so I recommend that if you are having trouble, just drop him a line. This is a fun and easy to read book, and the chapter that takes you through building a financial application in Atlas is worth the price alone. 4

A good start...

This book's not perfect, but then neither is the Atlas framework that it's based on - we're still at least 12 months from release after all. I found that this book was a good introduction to the basic structure and functionality of Atlas. It does what it sets out to do and gives you the foundations of the technology. If you're looking for the deepest secrets of Atlas this book isn't going to give it to you. If you want to know how it works, and want to know *now*, then this book is ideal. 1

Old syntax

This book has been the most difficult book I have every used. I have found more useful information from atlas.asp.net then in this book. Almost every example that I used has had either old syntax errors or just plain syntax errors. An alternative to the J2EE/.NET world view

Finally a book that expresses how scalable sites are developed using open source tools like Perl, PHP or Python. And it not only covers the technical aspects of writing scalable sites, but also some of the process elements like source control and revision tracking. This is an excellent book. It's well writtent and treats the reader with respect. It imparts ideas without going through every miniscule detail of implementation. I highly recommend this book. 5

Get this book if you're a developer or engineer considering doing a Web startup

Though it's nothing like a step-by-step guide (and it doesn't claim to be one), this book appears to be the closest thing available to a nuts and bolts look at managing the technical side of doing a Web-based startup. There's lots of code inside, but the book isn't built around a single, extremely contrived, case study like an online wine store. The chapters follow a general pattern: a topic (like bottlenecks in your application and platform, scaling, or monitoring) is addressed and some rules of thumb that describe the way that the author feels things should be done are set forth and explained, with numerous very specific hints and factoids mixed in along the way. The table of contents doesn't seem to have been posted here, but you can find it (and a sample chapter, "Data Integrity and Security") by searching for "oreilly catalog scalable web sites" on Google. 5

Starts out off-topic, and then WHAM...

...it's all there. Maybe it's my background, but I found the first seven chapters to be....dull, and not directly about scalability. To be honest, I almost set the book aside and considered it money NOT well-spent. Then things started to heat up in Chapter 8, and in Chapter 9 it all comes together. That one chapter (9) is the highest density of useful information about website scaling that I've ever seen. There are literally gems on every page. Make no mistake. This book is more of an overview of the landscape, with brief asides that are clearly brain-dumps from his Flickr experience. The author manages to touch on every topic area that matters, and provide simple overviews of the options available and when they should be applied. In that sense it's more like an informal design patterns book (lots of "yeah, I knew that" and "Ah! I had a feeling there was a pattern there" moments), with just enough detail to let me do intelligent googling for deeper insights on analysis, design, and construction of scalable systems. Good general overview of AJAX

I was looking for some basic information on AJAX, such as the XMLHttpRequest object. I was not aware that simple HTM (or any other text) could be passed back from the web server, now I know and that's very useful to know, since those are more useful to me that XML. This book gave me the general basic info I needed. Now that I've got a working knowledge of AJAX, I can find another book with more detail for more advanced uses of the capability. I think the book wasted space with it's attempt at an intro to html and intro to javascript. I'm not sure that anyone unfamiliar with these aspects of web development needs to be tackling AJAX, because they're probably not the least bit knowledgeable of server-side technology. Good read, up to date

This is the second Pragmatic Programmers book I've read to have been published as a "beta book." That means that early versions of the text and code were reviewed by lots of readers, and their feedback incorporated into the final version. It shows: this is a very current book which addresses most of the pressing issues around Ajax design and development in language-agnostic ways. There's a chapter that covers some of the current code libraries (like Dojo and Prototype) without playing favorites. The writers write reasonably well. There are some *very* clunky sentences and paragraphs, especially in the last chapter, which feels pretty rushed. And strange continuity mistakes show up in several places, such as references to upcoming material that was actually covered several chapters back. The two consecutive chapters titled "Ajax UI part I" and "Ajax UI part II" feel poorly organized. It's usually a sign an author can't quite figure out how to group material when you get chapters with such vague titles. It is very much a "primer" like the title says: it's an overview and introduction, not a complete guide to all the complexities of Ajax development (see the book "Ajax in Action" for that). It helpfully covers debugging techniques and degradable design. The Ajax support of server-side web frameworks are compared briefly. The good thing is that it's one of those tech books that you can get a lot out of by reading; you don't need to type in a lot of code to understand these concepts. Just don't expect this to be the only book on your Ajax shelf. The only section that's really out of place is, oddly, the first chapter. In it, the authors build a lightweight version of Google Maps, the application they rightly point to as generating a lot of initial interest in Ajax. But what they actually build is a very superficial version of Google Maps: theirs has no server-side component other than a set of images in a directory, and much of the time is spent handling the Javascript to allow the user to drag-scroll the map. It's cute, but that's not sufficient to serve as an example of Ajax. Their map application does not present data from a database, does not use any asynchronous behavior, and does not use the XMLHttpRequest object (or other remoting approach). Even by the authors' own definition of "Ajax" later in the book, this map project ain't it. On its own merits as a DHTML project it's not bad, but it's really out of place. (In fact, the table of contents listed on the publisher's own site suggests it used to be chapter four.) Following it, a short chapter on the basics of Javascript DOM manipulation is also useful, but probably not worth putting at the front of the book (it's also misleadingly titled "Ajax Explained"). If these two chapters were presented as a "DHTML case study Appendix", they'd be just as useful, but less distracting. 4

Great Primer for AJAX and Web 2.0

The only way to really learn Ajax (and the wider "Web 2.0") is write the code yourself, read sites like ajaxian.com, and understand Javascript. The writers behind this book know this because they have not infused a lot of overly complicated examples (as in "Ajax in Action"), but have instead given a wide survey of how Web 2.0 technologies work. The book starts out with a very readable overview of Ajax and follows that up with the best chapter in the book: a fascinating deconstruction of Google Maps. In subsequent chapters, they dive deeper into the XMLHTTPRequest and the mechanics of making asynchronous calls with Javascript. Since most people don't roll their own anymore, they cover client-side frameworks like prototype/scriptaculous and dojo. They cover server-side frameworks like DWR (Java), Rails (Ruby), and Sajax (PHP). They also cover alternate payload formats such as JSON. One thing to note here: AJAX used to refer to "Asynchronous Javascript and XML", but now that the suits have caught on to the term, it has become synonymous with richer web applications. Therefore, I think for the broader audience, AJAX === Web 2.0. Even this book blurs the distinction. For example, they cover some of scriptaculous' effects, which have nothing to do with Ajax. I did not find the chapter on debugging to be too great. For example, no mention of GreaseMonkey is made in the debugging section. I use this all the time to debug and inject stuff into my scripts. None of the chapters in this book is what I'd call comprehensive. It is a primer. The authors of this book have written a very concise, well-written introduction to the world of web 2.0. 5

This book demystifies the Ajax revolution. Highly recommended.

This book is so much more than a technical reference for Ajaxian techniques. It will help you understand how the whole Ajax revolution came about, and where it's going. After providing a foundation of Ajax background, the authors quickly jump in to the mother of all Ajax applications: Google Maps. Not only do they describe what made Google Maps so important, they discuss in detail how the UI side can be implemented. And the most exciting thing? After reading it, you'll feel like you could go out and create that kind of UI. It's very empowering! After the initial excitement of understanding the techniques used in Google Maps, the authors show you a very simple customer entry form and walk you through the process of implementing an Ajax lookup to populate city and state based on zipcode. Then, after teaching the reader how to write the Ajax code from scratch, they discussed Ajax frameworks and walked the reader through implementing the same functionality using the Dojo framework. I thought this progression was very effective. It really showed off the value of learning these frameworks rather than handcoding everything. There was plenty of great discussions of UI possibilities, validation techniques, and other things Ajax can help us with. Not only did the Authors do a great job of teaching the reader what to do, they also invested significant time helping the reader avoid common pitfalls. The book covers so much more: debugging, graceful degradation. JSON, server-side frameworks and Ajax with various server platforms. It finishes with a nice discussion of the future of Ajax. I plan to re-read this book and share it with my colleagues. The authors really did a great job putting this book together. Once you have the basics of Ajax down, you might be looking for some ideas of how to apply it to your own applications. Ajax Hacks by Bruce W. Perry fills that particular niche pretty well. Contents: Ajax Basics; Web Forms; Validation; Power Hacks for Web Developers; Direct Web Remoting (DWR) for Java Jocks; Hack Ajax with the Prototype and Rico Libraries; Work with Ajax and Ruby on Rails; Savor the script.aculo.us JavaScript Library; Options and Efficiencies; Index Perry collects 80 "hacks" in this volume, which is focused on different techniques for applying Ajax in various ways. The Basics section contains things that you probably will pick up in most Ajax books and tutorials, such as how to check for errors and how to detect which browser is being used. But the dynamic CSS generation ideas were pretty cool. From then on, you get a variety of hacks and code that show you how to do a number of things, such as populating dropdown lists, building mash-ups, and even how to do a drag-and-drop interface without round-tripping to the server with each action. This is one of those books that you probably won't buy with a particular need in mind, but after reading through the material you'll have some ideas that you want to explore further. Similar to most Hacks titles, it's also not a book you'd buy to learn Ajax. But given the assumption that you know the basics, this book makes a nice addition to your bookshelf for practicality and application purposes... 5

excellent ajax book

This is an excellent ajax book. Be sure you know javascript, xml, and css before you start reading the book. It's not for the beginner. The examples, especially the idea in the book are so good that you can use them in your real work everyday. It's the 3rd book i went through and I think it deserves the 5 stars. 2

The Last Book I'd Recommend on AJAX

A lot of O'Reilly books of late seem rushed, intended to fill a sudden small vacancy in the marketplace. This is one such book. It seems not well proofed, the code samples are often big blobs of text with no indentation or concern for formatting, and the content seems rushed and poorly considered. For example, the Ruby on Rails coverage is really slim, and the code looks like it was written a year ago. There's not a single example using RJS templates, the current standard way of writing AJAX in Rails. The Scriptaculous examples are already out of date (for example, the chapter on in-place editing is totally irrelevant - Rails has a means to do this in a single line of code by now) and the content is quite spare. If you need a book on Ajax, look for the Manning or Pragmatic Programmer books. All the other ones are quite poor, especially this one. I usually really like O'Reilly's work, but lately it's gotten watered-down. Holzner is one of the best tech writers

I admit to being a fan of Steve Holzner. The man is an excellent technical writer with a knack for communicating the most complex concepts in simple, concise language. I had (and still have) no particular interest in Ajax, but because I try to stay conversant with all platforms, I felt that if anyone could explain Ajax quickly, it would be Holzner. I am not disappointed. I don't think this book, despite its being a "dummies" title, will do a neophyte much good. If you aren't at least minimally familiar with HTML, Javascript, XML, PHP, CGIt CSS and some other technologies, you'll get lost really fast. On the other hand, for people who already possess at least some basic knowledge of these technologies, Holzner's book will quickl provide the conceptual framework you need for understanding Ajax. This book is SUPPOSED to be for dummies, not experts.

Having never touched any Javascript, XML, PHP, or Ajax, I assumed by the title of the book and the description on the back cover that this would let a complete beginner know everything that is needed to be known about these subjects. It started out fine, but as the code got more complex, more and more typos started showing up in the code. This was not impossible to remedy, thankfully, since all the code is available as a download on their website. The real problem, however, was digging through each line of code, comparing it to the copy I downloaded from their site, trying to figure out whether the error was my fault or the book's. Another nagging problem is that after the first couple chapters, the book stops giving you the complete code for each application, expecting you to already know what Javascript needs to be where after reading 100 pages of a "Dummies" book. Even worse, many times it only tells you WHERE to write said code, not WHY you write it; several lines are not explained at all, which makes remembering what goes where that much more difficult. By the time I got to Chapter 4, the typos, assumptions, errors, and several other problems forced me to give up on the book, return it to the store, and resort to simply reading more in-depth tutorials online for free. Sure, I could just copy the code straight from their download files and be done with it, but why bother copy/pasting something this complex without really understanding it, and paying thirty dollars to do so? I'm giving it two stars because the first couple chapters really did help me to get a vague understanding of how all this works, as well as some rudimentary Javascript. After that, it's too infuriating to bother with as a complete beginner, which is who the book is SUPPOSED to be for. 4

Hello, does the word "proofreading" mean anything to you?

This might be a wonderful book but it's hard to tell through the proofreading errors. I'm only 27 pages into chapter 2 and I've already found 25 errors. The errors might be manageable to someone who already knows how to program in JavaScript. But for those new to the language the errors will drive you crazy. There's no excuse for this kind of sloppiness in publishing. Just what I needed

Ajax and PHP came at exactly the right time in my self-inflicted education as I am just now gaining functional literacy in OOP, Client/Server. PHP, CSS et. al.. There are a lot of things to like about this book, starting with its organization. It starts off by documenting what you need to know to best use of this book. And supplies the URL/Hyperlinks to get those literacies if you don't have them. (Thank you!) It achieves a nice balance of choosing what needs to go into an appendix. It dispenses with the common irritating practice of showing code "excerpts" in favor of showing the entire script and follows each script example with a "What just happened" section that is as clear and concise as you will find anywhere. If you only buy one AJAX book, make it this one. 4

Building AJAX and PHP skills with Packt: Recommended

The book is good, the topic is right, and pretty much everyone is thrilling to learn how to benefit from AJAX -- even if this means you're going to use a lot of JavaScript, which you thought it was not necessary, since you know PHP, a powerful language, right? To be frank, I was contemplating this book quite a lot before daring to open it for real. I can't really explain why, but I was intimidated by the idea: not by its size (274 pages is a common size), not by the technology itself (I'm coding PHP pretty often, and JS is no more than... JS), so maybe it was just because I'm too conservative. I'm prone to use PHP pages the "go-to-the-server-and-come-back-with-another-one-please" way. And this book really tries to learn you the basics of AJAX, through practical examples, that is. Quite impressive, given that most of us are usually grabbing new ideas & technologies from on-line articles, not from books entirely dedicated to a subject. Packt (pronounced "packed") has made every effort to support this book, even up to a point where you're overwhelmed by their will to make it easier for you. Let's get to the point. The first contact with AJAX was, for most people, the suggest & autocomplete feature of Google Suggest, somewhere at the end of 2004 or beginning of 2005. If you want to implement such a feature for yourself, the whole Chapter 6 is dedicated to this subject: you will be implementing suggestions from PHP functions, with direct redirection to the corresponding manual page. Unless you don't actually need any book on the matter, you should start with the beginning, to get a clear idea of what "Asynchronous JavaScript with XML" really is, and why is it needed to improve usability and to make a site more responsive, or to find out some drawbacks of using AJAX (bookmarking may become pointless). The basic principles of AJAX are very much disclosed from the first chapter, where you're presented with a simple (and useless) simple PHP AJAX application, described in detail. There is to note that the book features the full sources of all the applications used in the instructional process. If you download the source code, the use of the printed one is somehow limited, unless you want to make notes on the book, for analysing how things are done. To ease the understanding, the book holds a few flowcharts, in key places. Otherwise, a rather important number of screenshots are presented to help you follow the topic even if you're not in the front of your computer. OK, you're an intermediate PHP developer, but you know very few of JavaScript. Client-side scripting was not one of your major interests. How are you going to swallow the book? Chapter 2 is set to make you feel more relaxed and comfortable. Not only it describes JavaScript and the Document Access Model (DOM) in a nutshell, but it also provides you with useful reference links (page 30). As a general rule, you will find useful URLs in several places throughout the book, so be prepared to improve your skills even after having finished with it. The next "hard nut" is the very heart of AJAX: the XMLHttpRequest object. You will learn of it in the same Chapter 2, and the table at page 47 lists its methods and properties. But it wasn't tough, so far. Most people already knew about DOM (at least if they have used CSS), and a bit of JS too. Some people never needed to use XML though, but, you know, the "X" in AJAX is from XML, even if there is no XML involved in the functioning of XMLHttpRequest, and you're not bound to use XML if you don't want to! XML is a vast subject, and so are DTSs, schemas and namespaces, XSLT and Xpath, etc. Page 55 lists some starting points, and recommends Appendix C (not present in the first printed edition) for an introduction to XSLT and Xpath. Fininshing the Chapter 2, which is very dense in information, will get you introduced to some basic handling of XML, but more important, to handling errors and throwing exceptions. In the real world, you will need to do some serious data processing at the server level. This is what Chapter 3 is meant for, with some more examples too. This time, you will also need to work with a database, MySQL in our case. Make sure you'll properly setup the database, because you will need to create some tables in some future sample project too -- fortunately, the book is supportive, especially if you're using phpMyAdmin. As a general rule, once the access to the database is solved, everything should "just work". Each sample needing MySQL access has the credentials in a config.php file, so it's better you just create the user "ajaxuser" with the password "practical", to avoid editing several files. The only problem I encountered was an error message: "Class 'mysqli' not found" which should be solved by adding extension=mysqli.so or extension=php_mysqli.dll to php.ini (and don't forget to restart Apache). One of the first usability gain of using AJAX is form validation within the same page, without pushing back and forth error pages and the like. This is the first thing I'll implement in a web site in the process of "ajaxing" it -- and you will read Chapter 4 to get a good grip of one of the most useful usages of AJAX. The rest of the book is very much a sequence of labs where you will learn more and more through practical exercises, with full code and explanations provided. You will do with AJAX: * a web chat (Chapter 5). * real-time charts with SVG (Chapter 7). * grids with client-side XSLT (Chapter 8). * a RSS reader (Chapter 9). * drag and drop (Chapter 10). What are my impressions with this book? Once I went beyond the initial reluctance, I could see the book is actually not a bad one. The four Romanian authors did a good job, although some would have appreciated if a more playful style was used, instead of the rather academic one. For instance, PHP books by Julie C. Meloni can be swallowed easier due to the lighter style, more appropriated for people not willing to feel like in the front of a teacher. Also, fragmenting the code with more comments shouldn't hurt -- no, actually not "code comments", but textual descriptions of what is actually happening in there. For a practical introduction into AJAX with PHP, I would rate the book with 4 stars out of 5, but not more, for style reasons mainly. 5

Add Ajax Client-side Features to PHP Driven Web Applications

This book assumes a working knowledge of PHP, XML, JavaScript and MySQL and that you have PHP, MySQL, phpMyAdmin and a server such as Apache installed on your computer. In this book the authors, Cristian Darie, Bogdan Brinzarea, Filip Chereches-Tosa and Mihai Bucica, teach their readers how to add Ajax client-side features to PHP driven web applications. As you would expect, the authors begin by discussing what Ajax is, its history and which Ajax features you will be adding to the PHP applications discussed in the book. The authors take a modular approach when building these web applications. The first programming task discussed in many computer books is client-side form validation and in this book the authors have done the same by showing how Ajax has changed the traditional form validation process. In the traditional process, the client-side validation occurs after the form has been submitted but before it reaches the server. The authors show you how to improve on this process by using Ajax to validate the user's input as he types. Next you will build an Ajax chat application. The authors do not cover supporting processes such as chat rooms, chat user lists and login. They choose to concentrate on improving the message posting and receiving processes using Ajax to eliminate the need to reload the webpage when performing these tasks. Before Ajax and other XMLHTTP related programming, this was only possible using Java, Flash or other special programming. Ajax was made popular due to Google Suggest. So it is only logical that the authors would show you how to build your own Ajax suggest and autocomplete application. The database used for the working example for this application is the PHP Function List at PHP.net. Next you learn how to build two real-time charting applications. The first is a graph drawn in real-time using SVG and the other is an Ajax grid using XSLT and XPath. Both of these applications update these charts without reloading the webpage. The popularity of RSS syndication makes this next application my favorite. You will build a simple RSS reader (aggregator) using Ajax, PHP, XSLT and SimpleSML. Finally, the last lesson is based on an existing web application (script.aculo.us). You will learn how to use Ajax to add drag and drop support to this task management application. (To Do List) The book has a supporting website which has working demos of the web applications featured in the book, sample chapters and a free case study eBook entitled AJAX Whiteboard. This is a simple Ajax web application that allows you to draw with your mouse. The authors of this book blend their varying backgrounds for this project. The best Ajax book

Easily the best Ajax book at the moment. The material is both entertaining and infomative. The asynchronous and client/server aspects of Ajax can make it tougher to understand, and the author does a good job of working through those issues in a way that makes it easy to understand. The book also covers the DOM and DHTML issues that you need to get the most out of the browser environment. 3

Beginners Bible

Very readable introduction

For those that do not know, Ajax is not a computer language, but a methodology to allow you to make a web-browser an application run-time environment, by combining html/xml, javascript, css/xlst, the XMLHttpRequest object and server side scripts/servlets/programs to asynchronously modify the DOM on the client. You basically use javascript to write your application logic, xml/html to define the data-model, and css/xlst to control the L&F of the interface. The XMLHttpRequest Object is used to asynchronously request application data JIT from the server (so it doesn't have to be downloaded with the app). Because the browser stores a page in a DOM, if you modify it this cause the page the redraw/repaint (NB not refresh) itself using the css/xlst associated with the page. This means that the server only needs to send a small subset of the page (a bit like how mpeg encoding partly compresses by recording only pixels that change), and these requests can get cached by the browser. This is a very readable introduction, however the head first style does not make it easy to use the book as a reference afterwards as the key information is spread over several pages. this is probably my only complaint (hence 4-stars). I think that Ajax in Action is better. because it offers more detailed coverage, and shows you a fuller set of examples and kits/libraries. However if you have been tasked to 2.0 the website yesterday. this book will show how to put the basics together in less than a day by pointing you at some handy resource. If you understood the above description you probably don't need to buy this book if you're a good googler, which is probably why there are quite a few second hand copies available. Great book on Ajax development

Many Ajax books have come to press this year and this one is an exception because it explains Ajax from an architecture style as opposed from a development style. What this means is that the book explains how REST is used in developing Ajax web applications. REST is a style on how to send data between a client and a server. Until now, the basics client/server or browser/server requests has been the same for years no matter what server technology you use (ASP, PHP, and JSP). With Ajax the way data is passed and retrieved to the client id different now. So, the way we architect web applications must be different too. Common sense right? Well, this is the first book that I've seen so far that explains Ajax in this way. The first chapter goes into an overview of Ajax and how it has changed how web applications work. It gives some good examples of various Google web applications and explains how the data is sent to the client behind the scenes. It also talks about the various architectural styles of development. The second chapter starts focuses on REST theory and data will be sent via the XMLHttpRequest object. It gives a good detailed explanation of the methods and properties and a sample class written in JavaScript that can be used. It also illustrates a debugging process of this class (in Firebox) and shows you how to run through the different states of the XMLHttpRequest. The third chapter reviews a new pattern ("content chunking") which the author shows you how to incrementally build an HTML page while separating the logic so that each section of the site can be loaded by user interaction. It's something I've never even thought about as I've recently read different Ajax books. Unfortunately, I cannot go into detail of this chapter (otherwise I'd be writing a book), but believe me it is an eye opener. The fourth chapter reviews another pattern ("cache controller") which is the pattern how Google created Google Maps in how the site temporarily stores data per session. This is another reason to buy this book as well. Again, I've never seen this methodology discussed in any other Ajax book. The rest of the book goes through other patterns in developing Ajax web applications that will enlighten you in helping you create the next generation of web apps (web 2.0). This book is skinny (less than 400), but each chapter really goes straight to the point in explaining each pattern and how Ajax can really be used correctly. A definite must buy for any web developer wanting to truly understand Ajax. 3

Great info, POOR presentation...

...which is ironic, because the author himself mentions that the reason Ajax is becoming so popular is that people demand better fit and finish in their presentation. This man DESPERATELY needs an editor (or a new/better one). Sentances run on and on, without ever getting directly to the point. Here's a great example of what's wrong with the book: in the first two chapters, he describes Ajax in painstaking (almost insulting) detail, but never really nails down WHAT "REST" is. Even after reading a section in the begining of Chapter 2, "Understanding REST Theory," I had to go to the Wikipedia page to learn just EXACTLY what it is. This is a good resource for learning Ajax, but there are other good reasources out there, too -- ones that are better written and won't leave you fighting to understand what's going on through every page. 4

Good Book, poor title...

This book was very useful as an introduction to AJAX. There are definitely practices that look useful, and ways to go about things that I will keep in mind. The author does not seem to know what a Design Pattern is. Most of the "patterns" that are introduced in this book are specific solutions. Design patterns are solutions to generic problems. The author jumps from pre-existing patterns being implemented for specific problems to introducing new "patterns" that only solve specific problems. The book is well written, but I think comprehension would be easier if he used a little UML. An example of this is his book class. Rather than building the whole class, he could have built a single class diagram, and then only shown the implementation of the non-trivial methods and properties. This would have taken less space, and been easier to read. Nothing in this book is rocket-science, but there are things that it might take a few projects to work out on your own. Moving beyond "Hello World" to cool applications...

If you already have a background in JavaServer Faces (JSF) and you want to start exploring the integration of that with some of the Web 2.0 technologies, Jonas Jacobi and John R. While there is a brief overview of JSF technology, you'll get the most out of the book if you already have a relatively solid grounding in it. They use two components, the Date Field and the Deck components, to show how JSF can be used to build internet application components that are able to be reused in other applications. The real value comes in Part 2, where they take those two components and start mixing them up with technologies that allow for rich internet functionality, such as Ajax and XUL. Using the examples provided, you start to see how a JSF application mixed with something like Ajax allows you to start building internet applications that behave more like desktop client apps... no round-trips to the server... no constant screen refreshes to get new content... Pretty cool stuff. I'd also recommend that you be pretty conversant with the rich internet technology already. Like with JSF, there's an assumption that you already understand the basics, so don't think that your first exposure to Ajax could be with this book. You'll be in pain if you try that route... If you've had the exposure and you're now looking for some really cool project on which to apply your JSF skills, this could easily be the book that helps you make that transition from "Hello World" to "ooooohhh..." 5

Advanced Guide

The authors begin "This book is not, and we would like to emphasize this, not an introductory level book..." That's for certain. Except for quick review material in the first chapter, the authors move quickly into a project that assumes a good amount of experience. The book effectively follows a pattern that you have seen before. Build a simple component, integrate it, then progressively build in functionality and complexity while dealing with usability and maintainability issues. One factor that makes this book stand out is the great number of flow diagrams. This book has the expected code printouts and screenshots but the extra emphasis on logic diagrams is exceptional. Also not seen in other JSF books are two chapters on providing Mozilla XUL and Microsoft .htc renderers. Yes, the last is a bit of a surprise! 5

The best of its kind

Ok to sum it up, if you want to learn jsf from scratch, stay away from it. If you know you way around JSF and want to dive into the the rather complex materia of how to write JSF components, this book is a must buy, there simply is no other book which does the coverage of this topic as extensive as this one. I have been programming JSF components for almost a year now and still lots of the covered subjects have been new to me. The wealth of information this book gives is simply amazing. Very well done

This book is very well done. It is a good introduction to AJAX and gets you up to speed quick. CONS: 1. Not enough treatment on the server side of things in the beginning chapters. Needed a little more on serializing XML, but then how do you do that in a platform-agnostic way. I was a little disappointed that there were little or no examples in java/jsp/servlet during the Basics, Patterns and XML chapters. Could have used that. Assumes knowledge of PHP. 2. Need a little more treatment of XML/XPath/XSLT. Gets a little bit confusing when the technologies are all combined. 3. I feel like the patterns chapter could have followed the XML/XPath/XSLT chapter. 4. Maybe JSON could be left for the back of the book since the X in AJAX stands for XML. Just a thought. 5. About 65 pages of the book are just on AjaxMail, which has numerous examples, but was a lot of reading to go through on one application. PROS: 1. Not a beginner's book. Assumes knowledge of many things, like PHP, network protocols, HTTP, etc. I'm glad a lot of those details were left out and AJAX was focused on. 2. Gets you up and running with good, working examples. 3. The patterns chapter is very helpful in deciding how to use the stuff. 4. Good chapter on widgets. 5. Bang for the buck when talking about the AJAX frameworks that are out there. Fairly good treatment of JPSpan, DWR and AJAX.NET. 5

Ajax made fun

I found this book to be extremely informative. It is written in a clear, engaging style that makes it a pleasure to read. The examples are well constructed, relevant to real world applications, and thoroughly explained. The essential bits of code are highlighted for quick reading. The most irritating thing about web development is cross-browser support, and authors do a great job to making this less intimidating and point readers to libraries to abstract away the differences. Also covered are related JavaScript XML, XPath, XSLT support, web services, RSS/Atom. PHP is the primary server side language used, though they chose .NET/C# for creating a web service. Microsoft's .NET web service tools are excellent, but I would have liked it if the authors had rounded this out with giving the basics of creating a web service using open source solutions. If you want to learn Ajax techniques and related technologies, this book is well worth your time and money. 5

Only AJAX book you should buy!

AJAX is the we technology everybody is talking abot now and its something that you should know if you are a web developer/designer now or want to be. This book starts with a great chapter explaing how AJAX started and what it really is and how it works. Explaining how AJAX really works can be dificult for the beginner and the authors do it wonderfully. The next chapter goes into the basics of AJAX and how to create a very simple example(s) to give the user a solid foundation of how this new technology works (old technology but new way of using it actally). The next chapter goes into Patterns which describes the programming techniques used by AJAX applications. This is a crucial chapter because it is this technique that allows developers to reall understand how to develop dynamic applications with AJAX. Lots of keywords are thrown around (throttling, periodic refreshing, multi-stage downloads, pending requests, etc) and each are excplained in detailed in a very concise manner that does not confuse the reader. The next chapter focuses on the data format that is used to transfer this data (XML, XPath, XSLT) between each other using AJAX. Various techniques with the different browsers are discussed as well as workarounds if needed for the browser differences. The rest of the book covers web services, JSON, widgets, andhte different frameworks that are available to use. A very complete AJAX book that will get any reader ready to se AJAX in their web development work.
